We're renting a car in Prague and plan to travel to the following countries: Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Slovakia, and Hungary. I contacted Budget directly but they can't tell me if I can take the car into Bosnia or Montenegro - I should "ask at the counter" when I get there. Anyone have any experience with driving (especially) from Split to Dubrovnik in a rental car, through Bosnia (near Neum)?
Don't know about Budget, but Europcar has rentals in all seven countries. My experience was with a loop starting and ending in Budapest. Hold onto your hat when you see what the cost will be due to insurance.
We made this trip about 4 years ago so I don't know if this information is still accurate for today. Driving along the Croatian coast there is a brief stretch of road that is in Bosnia. There were passport checkpoints, but basically we were waved through. We rented our car for use in Slovenia and Croatia.
Last fall we were in Croatia. Rented a car from Sixt when we arrived at the airport in Split and drove to Montenegro without a problem. You just let the company know that you are going there and you need a pass which they supply for a small fee. It was a beautiful drive, lots of places to stop and swim. Enjoy!
