Rental car for Italy and Crotia

We are going to be in Italy in April 2012. Want to rent a car for 3 weeks. Will be going to Croatia for a little more than a week. Anything special I need to be aware of? Also picking up in Milan and see that some of the the car hire companys are not there on sunday, also there is a hefty surcharge for retting it at the airport. Any suggestions on a company that is reliable, reasonably priced and not at but close to the airport? Thanks

HI Jim! We are here in Croatia, and the things we have needed to know about our car rentals is that your car has to have a green card to head into Croatia, since it is not in the EU yet. Your car company should have this no problem, but some companies prohibit you from driving into Croatia, so be sure to ask about this upon securing your reservation. As for Milan, which airport ar eyou going to? If your hotel offers a transfer service, you can take this and then rent in the city, which should get rid of the surcharge. Or, arrange a ride to an offsite car rental ahead of time with a car service. Also, one way rental charges can be prohibitive, depending on where you are returning to. So, an economic option is the return it to the same country or site if possible. We have used Sixt and they have been wonderful all over Europe. We rented in Slovenia for a week with a one way rental to Crotia and it was very reasonable. I hope this helps and feel free to ask any more questions, I am happy to help: ) Happy travels! Stacy
