We're leaving in two weeks for Italy/Dalmatian Coast and just learned that the Bosnian's have recently tacked on several hundred dollar fee for rental cars crossing their borders. Does anyone know if we can avoid this by detouring from Raba to Brijesta on the Peljesac Peninsula, then drive down the peninsula to return to the Adriatic Highway? We are renting our car in Italy.
We just got back from that area. We drove from Dubrovnik to Split via the beautiful coastal line on D8 instead of A1. No one charged us a thing. The two check points at Bosnia just looked at our passport and waved us through. But we rented the car in Croatia, not Italy. Italian rental agreement is different. There are many restrictions, on top of that most US insurance does not work in Italy, I am sure they force you to get their insurance. Because of that, the insurance stops at the Italian Boarder unless you pay an arm and a leg more. You have to make sure to let them know you are crossing into Croatia so they can draw up a different rental agreement for you. I would find a way to rent the car in Croatia instead of Italy.
You're getting the car in Italy. Where are you returning it?
The car will be dropped off in Italy.
Please see my other posting on this. This one has an error in the route of the detour we hope to take and explains why this new fee was imposed.
