A friend and myself are planning a trip to Romania in September and would appreciate any advice on where to travel, what to see, etc. We enjoy hiking, good food, good wine, interesting and off the beaten track adventures…

I suggest you go to your local library and get a few guidebooks and decide. Brasov (about 3 hrs from Bucharest) is highly recommended. I actually enjoyed Bran (aka Dracula's) castle which is a short distance away. There are a number of other places that are highly recommended but these will depend on what you like to do and time you have to spend.
