Good afternoon I am looking at taking a holiday in India for about 10 days in mid-October - possibly down in the GOA area and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or information about the safetly of a woman traveling alone in India. Thank you.

Tiffany,

While some here may have travelled in India (including Rick), you'll probably get a much better range of replies by posting this question on the Indian Subcontinent Forum on the Lonely Planet Message Board. You may also want to pack along the applicable LP Guidebook as it will be good reference material during the trip (especially if this is your first time there).

You may also want to have a look at the Health section on the LP Message Board, to ensure that you have the required vaccinations for that area (Malaria is one concern). I'm not familiar with the health facilities in Luxembourg, but you may wish to speak with your Physician or a Travel Medicine Clinic.

Have a look at the CDC website for more specific recommendations for travellers to India.

Hope this helps. Happy travels!

Tiffany, I really doubt you'll get much information on India here, Rick Steves is know for European guidebooks/travel. Try Fodors, Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet, etc and you'll get tons of information on the subject.

Are you planning on traveling around in those 10 days or just sticking to Goa. If staying just in Goa, you are going to be on the beach for most of that time I assume. Safety shouldn't be a problem. You will need to take care if you are going to hire a motorbike and ride around since the roads are narrow and the buses sometimes take up most of the roads.

The beaches in the north will be more crowded and more folks/tourists around. If you head to very S. Goa the beaches are much more deserted and smaller local population so probably requires you to be more aware of your surroundings.

Overall, you shouldn't have too many problems if just hanging out in Goa. And English is widely spoken so getting around shouldn't be a problem.
