On a cruise, with a brief time in Ephesus. Would like to get an independent tour... but hesitate. How can we be sure that it is a good one?

Well, I don't think there is any way to guarantee that your tour will be "good", but I would recommend that you search on the subject on this site and read what has been recommended and also to go to tripadvisor and do the same search reading what is available there. You will find several recommended tours/guides and you may even be able to email the person making the recommendation and ask further questions. We did our own tour using a private driver that we hired when we landed in Kusadasi. Whatever you decide, do go, it's definitely worth it. You'll also see folks recommending that you add the "terrace houses" which cost extra at Ephesus and I agree.
