We will be arriving in Istanbul a day early(in about a week!) and would like to know whether anyone has been there recently and whether they have found any great restaurants that they can recommend. These things change so frequently that Rick's book may not be totally up to date. We are particularly fond of fresh seafood. Thanks

Just got back from Istanbul. The best fish was at one of the small restaurants in the fish market of Istiklal Caddesi. I can't remember the name, but it is on the left a "block" up from Istaklal. It is a small, family owned spot with a frescoed ceiling. Sit outside and watch the world go by at the market.

I don't know whether this is in Rick's book or not, but one can't-miss is Asitane, in the hotel right next to the Chora Church. Its recipes are supposed to be based on the Ottoman cuisine served to the sultans. While I can't vouch for that, I can say that the menu is filled with delicious, unusual creations. So if you get tired of kabobs...
