Trying to finalize a trip to Croatia and Slovenia. Will travel first to Croatia in September and than north to Slovenia. Like everybody trying to find out where I go and don't go and for how long. After flying to Dubrovnik plan to take side trip to Montenegro. On paper I plan to visit Korcula and Hvar and go island to island by ferry. My plan was to stay a day on each island. I am traveling alone so am more into sightseeing than beach events so felt 1 day would be adequate, and go from Korcula up to Hvar, and than back to mainland to Split. One day in Split to see the Palace staying in Trogir. Pick up car in Trogir and than drive north. It has been a long time since I have driven a manual transmission car vs. automatic and I understand that automatic car is more expensive, but don't know if I want to learn how to relearn driving on a manual transmission car when I get to Croatia. Would like feedback from anybody who rented and if so from what agencies, and did they do it in the States vs. in country? From Trogir drive to Plativice for the day stay the night see some more the next day before driving to Rovinj. I would like to hear from those who stayted in Robinj and what were the sights that they took in and where they stayed. Long list, sorry, but the way I figure I am going to do it once and trying to get my ducks in order. Thanks George
George, you're planning a nice trip. Here are a few thoughts: If you are flying into Dubrovnik, I'd plan on at least two nights. One night each in Korcula and Hvar is plenty. Treating Split as a day trip and staying in Trogit is a good choice, in my opinion. Using public transit as far as Trogir makes sense. Regarding car rentals, I'd make those arrangements here so you know there is a car waiting for you. My husband and I both learned manual transmissions (many) years ago and currently drive automatics in this country. He is absolutely comfortable driving manual transmissions in our European rental cars. I won't (can't?) and so he drives on vacations and I navigate. If I were traveling alone, I wouldn't even attempt a manual transmission. The park visit sounds good, as does Rovinj. What's the rest of your itinerary?
As far as manual vs. automatic... I think its like riding a bike. Do you know anyone that has a manual that you could drive while in the US, just to see if you feel comfortable. They can be so much cheaper. It is so second nature and as all manuals are a bit different, even though I drive one at home everytime I am in a new rental car in Europe it takes a minute to get used to the clutch and the gears, but in no time you feel comfortable. The only place I will do an automatic is GB. Not sure I can do the wrong side manual, so I do automatic there. Or go to a car dealership and see if you can test drive a manual....
