We are travelling on a budget, and are thinking of using metro & tram to get from our hotel near Sirkeci station to the airport for our international flight (check in 1130). Just wondering if this is a good idea, or should we book a private transfer instead (eg. 20 euro with the Backpacker Travel company)? Anyone have any other advice regarding public transport in Istanbul? (Apart from the usual - moneybelt, pack light, leave plenty of time before our flight). This will be my first trip to Europe. Thanks
You will have no problem--there is a Metro station right at the airport, located between the international and domestic terminals. Very convenient and cheap.
If you are going to be in Istanbul for more than a day or so, get an akbil rather than using tokens--you will save money and it is really convenient and can be used on trams, Metro, ferries, and so forth.
Hi Chris,
The tram/metro system in Istanbul is very good. You can use this link to determine your route. We were in Istanbul in May and used the tram and metro nearly every day.

You'll have a great time in Istanbul!
Hello!
I think it all depends if your bags are heavy or not very heave.. if they aren't heave then you can use the public transportation..
Good luck!
Awesome - we plan to have light backpacks and are both trampers (you would perhaps call hikers) so are not worried about carrying bags, stairs etc. I have checked out a metro map and it seems we will need just one change from our hotel to the airport. So glad I told my travel agent to cancel the NZD$180 airport transfer she recommended!
