I'm trying to plan a weekend getaway to either Salzburg or Cesky Krumlov. (FYI: I already live here in Europe, so a weekend get-away is no big deal.) History & beauty are usually top priorities for our travel. Both these cities sound wonderful, yet I can only choose one for the get-away. If you'd been to both, which do you prefer and why? Any recommendations are welcome. Thanks!
The towns are so different that preference depends on what type of getaway you prefer. Salzburg is larger and has more to do and see. It would be a good choice if you want lots of options. There's plenty of history and it's probably the more beautiful town in a traditional sense. Cesky Krumlov is fairly small and well suited for a laid back getaway. The town's charm is its main attraction, with just enough to do for a weekend. I enjoyed both for different reasons. I'd go back to Salzburg for an active weekend and to Cesky Krumlov for a quieter one. Hope this helps.
I think Frank has differentiated the towns really well. The only thing that I would add to consider would be the time of year. If you are planning a winter get-away I think I would go for Salzburg because there are more inside things to do. Part of the charm of Cesky Krumlov is the gardens and the river. Pam
Frank and Pamela said it all.
We spent 4 days in Salsburg and 2 or 3 in Cesky Krumlov. Both are great.
I agree with the others...Salzburg is probably my favorite of the two because it is charming, historic, and is packed with enough to do for several days. Cesky Krumlov is picturesque and laid back but I found myself wanting to move on after 2 days. The first time I went to Salzburg I vowed to return but I didn't have the same sense after visiting Cesky Krumlov. An added benefit was I thought the locals were much friendlier in Salzburg.
When I read, the first thing I thought was where I'd go back to if I could choose one. CK was my choice. I agree with time of year being differentiator. Summer in CK with river and garden. For me, another would getting there. Salzburg is more accessible.
Since CK is more compact, where you stay is more important. We splurged on Castleview and would do again. I liked the pedetrian only areas, river activity, serentity after dark.
