Pre-trip travel

We're taking the RS Best of Adriatic tour in June and we'd like to add a week or two of independent travel. The tour starts in Ljubijana and goes to Bled, Kobarid, Istria, Rovinj, Pula, Opatija, Plitvice, Split, Hvar, Korcula, Mostar and ends in Dubrovnik. I'd love suggestions of other areas to visit before or after the tour. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Well, you've got, say, Paris east to Istanbul within (about) an overnight train trip from the area - even further if you hop a plane. I'll go out on a limb, and guess you've been to Europe before - so you have an embarrasment of riches available - spend a week in Venice & the Veneto, tour the alps, visit Hungary, visit Greece, yadda yadda yadda - there's an awful lot of choices - maybe just take Google earth and slop it around a bit for inspiration.

Possibly pick an old favourite and chill out before the Adriatic tour, or go see some other new spot - your choice & it's all good either way

Thanks, Stephen. You're right, I have a lot of choices, but I'm wondering if there are special places we might want to visit in the vicinity of the tour. It's an area I haven't been to and I'm just beginning my planning. Maybe we just want to spend extra days in Ljubijana and Dubrovnik (the beginning and ending cities). I was just looking for places people have especially enjoyed visiting. Thanks again. Nancy

Alas, I've never been to the former Yugoslavia myself. The only places I have much information on are Dubrovnik, Mostar and Split - and you're going to them!

So, my only input of substance is on the surrounding areas.

On consideration, the Lonely Planet Thorn tree forums may actually be a good resource for you, as the RS crowd are fairly Western Europe-centric.

Have a great trip!
