Prague: transit to hotel and outdoor cinema

First, the logistics question: We're staying at the Yellow Boot near the castle, family of 4. Does anyone have advice on taking public transit from the main train station, or will information be easy to find at the station? Hotel suggests a cab, but to save nearly $50, we're open to tram and metro rides. We'll have a carryon bag apiece.

Does anyone have experience going to the outdoor cinemas I've been reading about? Do you recommend this? Best locations that would entertain our 2 teenagers?

Thanks in advance; we leave Friday and I'm very excited!

It would be a good idea to have a little compass, and to get a map. If you use an ATM, suggest you ask for an odd amount, say 3900 kc (I asked for 4000 kc and got 2-2000 kc notes). Get public transit tickets from the vending machines at street level of the station, tobacco shops or ticket windows in larger stations. 20 kc tickets that allow transfers are good for 75 minutes from first validation (90 min after 8PM or on weekends), 24-hour passes are 80 kc, 3-day passes 220 kc, 7-day passes 280 kc. (20 kc~$1)

From either train station take the red "C" Metro line (direction Haje) to "Muzeum"; change to the green "A" line (direction Dejvická) and get off at "Malostranska", on the west side of the river.

Take the southbound #12 tram (direction Hlubocepy) one stop to "Malostranské námestí" (Lesser Town Square), the heart of Mala Strana (the Little Quarter), which is centered on St. Nicholas Church. The castle is directly north and uphill from here, and it's walking distance to your hotel.

Go to the northwest corner of the square and find a street called Nerudova, follow it west (parallel to the castle wall) about 250 yards to a street on the left (away from the castle) called "Jánský vršek"; "U Zlute Boty" (Yellow Boot) is Jánský vršek 11.

Have a great trip, but watch your stuff; I got my pocket picked on the Metro, but otherwise really enjoyed Prague.

Just an update, in case anyone else needs to get to "The Yellow Boot": thanks to a PM from Chris (answering above), we took his advice to leave the train at the Holesovice station. From there, tram 12 took us within a few blocks of the hotel. Total price for 4 of us (15-year-old was half price) was 49 crowns, about $2.50. I love the trams in Prague! Thanks Chris, for the helpful info.

Taxi from the hl.n should not cost $50. I would take a taxi and get out of the train area asap. You approach the taxi of your choosing. Do not let them choose you. That was the advice of our friends that live just outside of Prague.

Always ask the price....then bargain if you think it is too high.

In my opinion, I would stay off the trams. That and the train stations is where the professional pick pockets lurk.

They can look like business men, mothers, sisters and your ordinary looking tourist.

Call your hotel and ask them what the normal taxi fare is from the hl.n to the hotel. Have them advise you what tqaxi company to use.

JB - As I said in my initial post, the hotel recommended a cab, actually one of those minibus things, and the price per person x 4 was going to be $50! That's why I asked about public transit. The trams worked out great for us, and since we went into Holesovice station, the area may have been a bit nicer than the main station in Prague. We didn't have any problem with pickpockets, but I did insist that my husband not carry a wallet. I had a death grip on my purse whenever we were in crowds.
