Hi, Does anyone have suggestions on where to stay in Prague? I have Rick's guide book, but I was hoping to hear about personal experiences. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Mala Strana area is probably the best. It is just across the river from the hustle and bustle of tourists and shops in the old city. I would avoid staying too close to Charles Bridge which is a never-ending flood of tourists and merchants. We stayed in the Dum U Tri Capu (The Three Storks). Super nice modern interior new hotel. Also the Hotel Roma is not far and is a nice place. If you look on Tripadvisor you will see the Arcadia Residence which is rated number 1 with consistently wonderful reviews. I think I might give them a try just because they are so dirt cheap AND wonderful.
The last couple of times that I've been to Prague I've stayed in an apartment. Generally a lot cheaper than hotels with more room, although not generally as central. For me this isn't a problem, especially given public transport is so good.
If the idea appeals to you google will throw up a lot of options. I was pleased with those run by the Falta family, who have a web site at
http://www.accommodation-prague.cz/main/start_en.htm
They have several around the city and I stayed in the one in Tusarova. As the site says it is a couple of minutes from a tram stop and I never had to wait more than 5 minutes. A metro is about 20 minutes walk away and trams from the end of the street go past it.
Mr Falta himself speaks reasonable English, picks you up from the airport for free, and is generally helpful.
I've also stayed here, which is more expensive, nicer and more central

Both are worth a look depending on budget, what you're after etc.
Cheers

I stayed at Pension U Medvidku (sp), listed in Rick's Book. There was nothing spectacular about this place, but it's clean, comfortable, conveniently located close to the Old Town Sqaure, relatively cheap and has a nice beer hall located on the ground floor.
I just booked a room for March at the Guest House Lida recommended in Rick's book and also suggested by several on this site. They responded quickly to me e-mail inquiry in English and seemed very helpful. It is less expensive than hotels in the city center.
I'd echo Tom's post regarding Pension U Medvidku. It is a really interesting building and the eats at the beer hall are cheap and filling.
In Prague, we stayed at Ibis Mala Strana, a short walk from Republic Square. It is a simple yet clean hotel. The bathrooms are modern, good all-you-can eat breakfast and English is spoken by everyone.
The best part is that, this hotel is beside an ultra-modern mall (I think the second biggest in that country). Like any typical mall in the US, the top floor is the food court and has everything. You can select from pizza, mcdonalds, panda, etc.
This hotel is also a few blocks away from the subway train. Four stops will take you to the old town and you can walk from there to wherever you want to go. From the old town we just walked and walked and walked and we saw everything we wanted to see, including the charles bridge, st. vitus cathedral and many others along the way.
Please note that this is only a 2 or 3 star hotel, but well worth it!!!!!
We stayed at an apartment on Zatecka- about 2 blocks from Old Town Square. Good location and reasonable. Find at www.a-prague,com.
In Prague we stay at Hotel Julian. Great staff,
breakfast and AC rooms. It is slightly off the
beaten path, but public tram and bus are just
around the corner. About 3 stops to Old Town.
According to his DVD on Prague this is where Rick
stays when in town. Also a great value with fairly
inexpensive rooms.
My husband and I stayed at Guest House Lida in May 2006. We loved the place!... 10 min away by subway; short walk and trolley up riverside takes 15 min to 20 min; or city bus thru downtown in about 20 min. We did all three options for fun. It's in a charming neighborhood on a hillside which faces toward the river and old town. The brothers who run Guest House Lida were exceptionally helpful. For a decent fee, they took us to the airport (at 4:15am, before the subways start running out there) so, no worries about fair taxi fares. We plan to return to Prague AND G-H-L this September 2008.
I second the Guesthouse Lida recommendation. I stayed there this past October. The owners are amazingly helpful and nice. They have a great breakfast spread each morning and you can socialize with others if you want. They also have free internet access. They will help you make any reservations you need - whether it is for a day trip, a concert, etc. They will also answer any questions you may have (i.e. where to eat, what bus/trolley/subway to take to where, etc.). I also had to do the o'dark hundred taxi trip to the airport and I thought it was a reasonable price.
When I return to Prague I fully intend to stay there again.
In case you need a third opinion: Guest House Lida. It was just like Kelly and Eileen say above in 2003. Go for it!
Try the Hotel Europa, right on Wenceslas Square at number 25. A character by the name Lou Vacek runs a sort of travel agency out of a room off the lobby there. He specializes in brokering the hotel's un-rented rooms at fantastic discounts. When I was there three years ago the room I rented from him for $25 had a posted rack rate of $100.
The Europa has a beautiful Art Nouveau interior, supposedly the design inspiration for the RMS Titanic, and was used to film some interior scenes for "Mission Impossible." Plus, the central location is unbeatable.
We just returned from Prague last week and stayed at the Green Garland Pension. We loved it because of the hospitality, and they were right by the Charles Bridge. You could go visit Prague Castle, walk back to your lodging and enjoy their free tea/coffee they had set up upstairs and rest a minute on their sofas. Then take off walking again to your next destination. The proximity to everything made it perfect!
We stayed at the Bellagio Hotel which is in the Jewish quarter. It was just a short walk from the Old Town and was wonderful. The rates are reasonable and we felt that we were treated extremely well.
