Prague in January

Hi - I'm thinking of going to Prague around mid-Jan/2010. I have to book this pretty quickly - flight sale for limited time. I'm thinking of spending 7 ngts - is that long enough, too short, just right? Advice on weather, place to go, see, museums, etc - all very appreciated. Thanks!

7 nights is probably more than you need for Prague alone. It's a great city for exploring on foot but it doesn't have too many museums or other "sites" to tour. Perhaps someone who knows the Czech Republic better than I can recommend some worthwhile daytrips.

I just came back from my third visit to Prague and we spent 7 nights in the city alone; however, it's one of my favorites, so I'm biased. I think it gives you enough time to really explore outside of the over-touristed areas. But you can always go on daytrips if you feel the need to get out of the city -- Cesky Krumlov, Kutna Hora, Karlovy Vary, etc. I've never been to Prague in the winter, so I can't advise you on that ... although to my Louisiana blood, it sounds very, very cold :)

Hi - thanks very much for your replies. I did want to do a day trip to Cesky Crumlov, so I'll look into the others as well.
Finally, I will be traveling alone - is it (hopefully) possible to find english speakers should I get lost?
Thanks again!

In Prague, you'll have no trouble finding English speakers. Once you're out of the city, it just depends. I'll let someone else answer more definitively as I haven't been anywhere in the Czech Republic but outside of Prague in quite a few years.

Ashley - thanks again for the info. For some reason Prague makes me a little nervous language wise, even though I've managed in France & Greece quite well.
Appreciated!

I was in Prague at Christmas a few years ago and it was brutally cold...But, for one thing, they are set up for it; there are many outdoor cafes with powerful space heaters so that you can actually sit outside and enjoy the view in comfort. Plus it seems that Central Europe has had milder winters than usual the last few years. I noticed that many days last winter and the winter before were warmer there than here in Oklahoma. But don't count on that:-) Be sure to have a hat, scarf, and gloves. If you plan on taking lots of pictures, maybe find some fingerless gloves. I had bulky mittens which kept my hands warm, but I have woefully few pictures to show for my time in that magical city. Have a great time!
