I have heard that one gets a better rate in Hungary when the local currency is used. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE SAME HOLDS TRUE FOR PRAGUE. SHOULD I GET LOCAL CURRENCY IN STEAD OF EURO?
I spent a week in Prague last month and saw NO prices listed in Euros. Get their local currency at any ATM using your debit card. I also traveled thru the Eastern (Central) European countries and the same applied. The only place I found euros being used was in Vienna where that country is on the euro.
The answer to this is an emphatic YES ! It's a no brainer - use CZK.
Let's see...if I visit the USA would it be better to bring Chinese Yuan with me or perhaps US Dollars???
Thanks for the information. Because Prague is in the EU ( I believe) I thought the Euro would be accepted. I now understand that even when it is....the local currency is a better exchange.
Many of the hotels will take Euro, but the price in Kc is much better. The only currency most businesses take is the Kc.
Yes, Czech Republic is part of the EU, but they have postponed adopting the Euro, & as of right now no set date. I'm one of those lucky people that get to hear from my inlaws and friends over there what's going on. Many Czechs do not want the Euro because it will cause everything to go up with inflation. Almost the only folks there that are really for it are who own businesses that export product. Added to that, many folks there think the EU has too much power over CZ already & do not like having some outside power controlling their money. Knowing the country's history of being controlled most of the time by other powers (Austria-Germany-Soviet Union), it is understandable. Seeing that 21 of the 25 senator seats are open to re-election this year, it is not hard to believe who has the government's ear on this matter.
Thank you for posting some historical perspective on the history of Prague and the non-interest in adopting the EU...It all makes perfect sense now.
Hungary doesn't use Euro yet.
