Prague -Classical Music and Opera

May, 2013 Prague Classical Music and Opera
I will be in Prague May 21 – 24, 2013. Leave for Vienna on May 25. Any insights on Classical Music and Opera performances - tickets? Heard rumors there is an international music festival – but on-line info is a little spotty. Any ideas on a place to stay that would be convenient and safe for a solo retired woman to attend a few musical events.

Both Prague and Vienna are very skilled at catering to the needs of tourists. There are literally doziens of concerts every week in venues all over each town. Because everything is so tourist driven you should have no problems at all with either finding the venue or with safety. Both towns are lovely. In Vienna my favorite hotel is the Imperial. In Prague its the Hotel Ventana. Both are in spectacular locations .... once again, for tourism.

As James said, both cities are quite safe overall, and have lots of convenient lodgings. Take a look at the Rick Steves books on these places for lodgings ideas. If you want a more specific recommendation, please indicate your budget and specific needs (elevator? breakfast? etc). Rick also has some information about classical music and opera in each city, including the main companies and venues, as well as on the performances given in powdered wigs just for tourists. If you want something specific (e.g. a performance by a certain company, or of certain pieces), you'll probably want to book in advance. Something like the Vienna Staatsoper will sell out (although Rick has detailed directions about standing room, if you want that).

There is usually a big music festival in May/June in Prague, called Prague Spring International Music Festival (see http://www.festival.cz/en). It's way too early to book tickets or find out who is playing, but track the website in the fall to see what is posted. The Municipal House is a spectacular venue. I was in Prague in late May this year but did not make it to any of the events (all were sold out) I stayed solo at Central Hotel and felt safe and close to everything (including Municipal House).

In Prague, there are at least two central ticket offices for the various classical concerts going on at any one time in the city. One is by the entrace to Tyn Cathedral, and the other sits across the street from... from... sorry, I don't remember the name, but it's across the street from the large church you pass as you walk uphill to the castle. Most of the ensembles are semi-professional or student. Getting tickets to these are easy.

Tom is thinking of the Via Musica box office across from the Church of St. Nicholas (in Little Quarter)

i was there in May and stayed at Hotel Grand Praha (old world elegance) opposite astronomical clock. Very central and safe great place for sgle person as there is always activity in plaza. The hotel overlooks the plaza so you can enjoy the music , clock entertainment and terrific buffet breakfasts. they have website specials or ck expedia for their specials.Walk to almost everything from this location. Prague is a busy city but quite safe in the tourist areas for sure during day and early eve. i walked solo alot to the sights.
