Prague and where else?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Prague to visit a friend. We plan to have 5 days on the ground (not including travel time). Is there an adjacent city we should plan to see as well, or some great German border town? We would likely go in early June. Thanks.

I would recommend Cesky Krumlov. Beautiful fairy tale town 3 to 4 hours from Prague by bus or train. That would be better overnight. Or Kutna Hora about 1 hour from Prague by bus or train. What to see there and some other suggestion you can find in Rick Steves book Prague and the Czech Republic.

Ditto Cesky Krumlov. There is a shuttle bus service that does that run faster than the train (slow train stops a lot + change trains) for about $12/person each way, plus it stops closer to the town center. CK was an important city 400 years ago, then was forgotten - so not spoiled - since. It is a nice break from big city Prague and a glimpse into centuries past.

I would also recommend Cesky Krumlov.

Jill,

I'm suggesting a great city on the German side of the border which is about 2.5 hrs by train, very doable as a day trip: Dresden. Take the train from Prague to Dresden Hauptbahnhof and then walk about 25-30 mins. to the sites, well worth it and a marvel.

I would suggest Vienna. It is only about four hours by train and one of my favourite European cities.

Hi Jill,

I would second Vienna! Austria is a very picturesque country, friendly people, and not to mention the yummy food! As the old capital of the powerful Austro-Hungarian Empire, Vienna has beautiful architecture, famous palaces such as Schonbrunn and the Hofburg Imperial Palace which houses a great Empress Sisi museum, and of course the music and opera scene is more than ideal!

Vienna is amazing and Austria is amazing, but this is only 5 days, most of which is Prague, so it doesn't seem practical to me to pop into Austria for a day or, at most, 2 days. If you do Cesky Krumlov, you retain a logical Czech experience for the duration of your 5 days. It's also a nice urban/rural combo, rather than adding another big city.

Come back another time and spend 2 weeks in Austria.

If you have only 5 days Prague and Vienna would be too rushed.
