We will be traveling to Prague for a week for the first time this autumn. We will be flying in & out of Prague. We would like to travel by train to visit Vienna. Does this make sense given the time frame? If so, for how long should we stay in Vienna? Any advice is appreciated!
I think that the 2 cities are 4 hours apart by train. I stayed in Prague 4 nights and Vienna 3 nights last Nov/Dec. I found the time was plenty for both cities and that maybe could have gotten away with 2 nights in Vienna. So, in my opinion, Vienna is a possibility from Prague.
I had six days in Vienna last summer and it wasn't too much. Actually - it wasn't enough. We did take one day-trip out of the city. If you like museums, history and the arts, you'll see (and taste) very little in two dsys. I'm going back for two days this winter and am considering another week there in 2012.
It makes good sense to do both. They are not far apart by train and have good weather in September into October.
How much time depends on your interests. Prague has less in the way of museums, but both cities are great walking towns. I'd say a 3 night minimum for Prague and about 4 nights for Vienna. That can change depending on day trips you might desire.
You'd also be best to try and get an open jaw flight to avoid backtracking.
We did Prague-Vienna-Budapest in 9 nts two years ago in autumn with a driver...beautiful time to go! One of our highlights was a day in the Wachau, an hour west of Vienna. It's in RS book (Durnstein)...small villages, vineyards and breathtakingly beautiful!! I personally think 3 nts in Prague is good and you could do the rest in Austria until you return for your flight. Also, in Vienna make sure to take the train out to some of the heuringen (sp?) in the suburbs.
