Prague and Dietary Restrictions

I have to travel to Prague with a friend who just went from being vegetarian to vegan. As it's a week long business trip, we'll spend the majority of our time in the city, but may add a few days on towards the end of the week to explore the countryside.

Having just watched an episode of Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" on The Travel Channel, Prague seems like paradise for meat eaters. For those who have been to Prague, how easy or difficult will it be for my friend to stick to her strict vegan diet? I'm talking absolutely no meat, fish, poultry, dairy or eggs (including no milk or eggs in baked goods). How about once we get outside of the city and into more rural areas?

As for me, I'm looking forward to having some of the roast pork Bourdain tried on his show! Yum!

You friend might have to self-cater. In restaurants, vegetarians can usually find something (carp, bread), but it's going to be tough finding vegan-approved options. The breads and pastries often have milk or butter in them, and even the vegetables are often cooked in butter or a meat stock. I've actually been to Prague with a vegetarian. After five days, she was an ex-vegetarian.

Thanks for the response. She's been vegetarian for over a decade, so likely won't give it up for a trip to Prague. If she was still open to dairy and eggs, I would not think it would be hard to find something at a restaurant. But the vegan diet throws a bigger wrench into the picture. Unfortunately, we can't self cater as it's a business trip and we have to stay in a hotel. She'll just have to eat raw veggies in a hotel room or relax on the no dairy/no eggs. Hoping we can maybe find some ethnic restaurants in the city with Indian or Chinese food. Having never been to Prague not sure how prevalent these types of eateries are. If it's difficult for her to maintain a vegan diet in the city, I guess the bigger problem will be when we venture outside the city into the countryside.

Ciedleh, Are you familiar with the site happycow.net? They list vegetarian and veg-friendly restaurants around the world.

Thank you for the tip, Laura. Sounds like a great resource, so will be sure to look up what listings they may have for Prague.

Thanks for posting Ceidleh! I saw that episode of No Reservations as well and started getting nervous about what I'm going to eat in Prague! I'm not a vegan, but I don't eat any meat, and it does seem like meat loving country!

I'm hoping I can find a few "standards" that are meat-less so I can just have a go to menu item no matter where we eat!

Both restaurants, U fleku and U Medviku, offer vegetarian fare and from what I remember, no dairy products were on our meal. You can look at their menus online. Both have decent beer. Happy Cow should also give a nice explanation of the vegetarian restaurants as well. It was hard to be a Vegetarian in Eastern Europe, no doubt, but I was glad that I was not acting like a Vegan because it would have been tough. But Vegan restaurants do exist and it seemed like Vegan dishes existed in places that served a nice big piece of pork knuckle. If you research it, you may find the best of both worlds.
