I am 60, I love to travel and I love to dance and I am a photographer. Im am working/ shooting for a week near Rome. I want to travel for 2 weeks afterwards. I am taking my very, very well traveled 25 year old son as my companion.
He wants to go to Prague. What kind of trip could be schedule for that area, can I use rome as my base and come back there to fly back to the usa, should we rent a car. I hate to rush but my client is making the plane reservations for me this week so I have to plan my trip very soon.
Rome to Prague is a long distance which justifies flying. If you have to fly back to US from Rome then book your flight Rome-Prague round trip. If you don't have to fly back to US from Rome then I would book open jaw: US-Rome and back Prague US. What to see in Prague area: to get some idea I would recommend Rick Steves book: Prague and the Czech Republic. Just to get to Prague car would be impractical. But you could use it for leisurely cross countries drive there and back with stops.
Prague is a good start but its a little bit predictable. So, after Prague to either Romania or Bulgaria and then back to the states on an open jaw ticket out of Budapest. Well, you said Prague and "Beyond". Really not complicated or particularly expensive if you have the time. What sort of subjects are you interested in for your photography?
With two weeks after Rome, I would fly into Vienna, spend a few days, train to Budapest spend a few days, and then train to Prague and spend a few days. Fly home from Prague. I would not go back and forth to Rome. For discount airlines within Europe: www.skyscanner.net

LaRae you opened it for me. I love Budapest but I try to think beyond Budapest every chance i get. Yes, if it were me I would do almost the same; I would fly to Prague and then train southeast to Vienna and then to Budapest and then fly out of Budapest home. Although I have to admit I have had some of my most remarkable vacations in Bulgaria and Romania and if one is looking for the out of the ordinary strikingly beautiful and facinating places then Bulgaria and Romania shoudl be at the top of the list.
