We were wondering if you thought staying near the castle was a good idea. The place we're looking at is on Nerudova or is it better stay in zone 02? We're trying to save some money by not staying in Old City. We don't mind walking a mile.

Jodie, I stayed at the Green Garland Pension in Prague. It's somewhat basic, but the rooms were clean and comfortable, a good breakfast was provided and the staff were great! It's on the opposite side of the river than the Castle, but a VERY easy walk to both the Charles Bridge as well as sights in the "old town". Cheers!
My only problem with staying near the castle would be that there's not much else there - few restaurants, etc. If you don't mind taking the tram or walking (and as said above, some of the grades are steep), it would be fine.
All good information, thanks for sharing. Any thoughts on staying south of main train station in zone 02 or right on the river, south of Charles Bridge near New Town?
Jodie I've stayed in Nerudova, at just about the point where the steps lead off to the castle, and it was fine assuming you enjoy walking. It's a nice area, you are close to the castle, and you can easily walk across the river to other attractions. The only potential downside is if you aren't that fit. It was only a few minutes walk up to where I was staying but it was very steep! Alan
Jodie By zone 02 do you mean Prague 2, the postcode area? If so I'd say it's a nice area to stay. I had a friend who lived there for a while and it was close enough in that you could get to the main sites easily but just enough out that it wasn't overrun with visitors. Your initial post said you were looking at places out of the centre to save a bit of cash. Essentially I find public transport is so good in Prague that you can stay pretty much anywhere if you are prepared to spend a few minutes on a tram or metro getting to the centre. For example, I've stayed in the Slezka apartment here a couple of times http://www.accommodation-prague.cz/main/start_en.htm It's certainly not flash but it's perfectly acceptable. It's two minutes from a metro station and then five minutes into the centre. The area itself is quite nice and there are local - and therefore cheaper - restaurants close by. Alan
Nothing wrong with staying on the castle side. Not as many pub and restaurants open at night though. Staying on the river would be central.
My husband and I stayed at the Hunger Wall Residence last summer. We loved it. The location is amazing - quiet, right by a tram stop, close to the river. The staff was so kind, and we loved our room. The breakfast was included and SO good. I can't say enough about it.
