Prague accomodations

My husband and I are travelling with another couple to Prague in September. We'd like to walk to all Rick's highlights. What section of town should we stay in? Any recommendations for an apartment for 4? We'd like to spend around $60-$70 per night per couple.

Praha 1 and Praha 2 are the areas to stay if you want to be within walking distance of all the main sights.

Accommodation in the center of Prague isn't cheap anymore and you may find that you need to review your budget. There are cheaper places to stay in Prague but they will mean that you need to catch a tram to see the sights.

Sadly Prague is becoming very expensive.

We stayed in the Mala Strana area just below the castle. It was easy walking distance to everything and there was also a big metro station in Mala Strana. There are many embassies in the area therefore lots of security people walking around.

I would not recommend the Wenceslas Square are for accomodations because it's very crowded and not really very nice...not as nice as the areas in Mala Strana.

We stayed at "The 3 Storks" - Dum Tri Capu which is a very modern and somewhat new hotel. It was very nice. There was another much less expensive place close by called the Hotel Roma. Try not to stay right at the Charles Bridge because there are many many many people/tourists there. Another area I would highly recommend is the Jewish district and the Hotel Hastal - http://www.hotelhastalprague.com/

We were really torn between the 3 Storks and Hotel Hastal. Both were nice, but I think the Hotel Hastal probably has a more homey feeling while the 3 Storks is more upscale and modern (and probably more expensive). The reason I recommend the Jewish District is because there is lots to see, and every evening we seemed to end up in this area for dinner. Our favorite restaurant, Chez Marcel, is located there.

Lastly, a good website for finding outstanding hotel/airport transportation deals is http://www.nifos.cz/ They had a fabulous deal for the Hotel Roma during our stay in Prague.

Have fun in Prague, it's really beautiful. Don't forget to take a daytrip if you have time. We went to the silver mines in Kutna Hora and had a great little daytrip...very interesting, easy, and enjoyable.

If you don't mind being slightly outside the centre you might consider this

http://www.hotelsprague.cz/slezska2/

Apartments 1 and 2 have separate lockable doors but share a corridor and fridge. The area is 2 metro stations from the top of Wencelas Square and the metro station is 2 minutes away.

There are local restaurants, which are cheaper than the centre, plus nearby parks. This church is just round the corner

I've stayed there twice and really enjoyed it both times.

Cheers

We stayed at 5 Masna House which was located at 5 Masna Street and was a PERFECT location! It was quite with free internet access and someone at the desk 24/7. They have several rooms. There is an elevator but you must carry your bags up a flight of stairs before you get to that level. If you stay more than 3 days they pick up up at the airport or train station and take you back free. It was very clean with a washer. A small grocery store was across the street and a huge two level grocery store was in a shopping center nearby. Since we returned, I have spoken with several other who have stayed there and all were very happy. Our room overlooked a courtyard.

If you don't stay in old town, the public transit system is very good. We had no problem getting back and forth the last time we were there.

I would also recommend Guesthouse Lida. It would fall in your price point and it is a lovely place to stay. The owners are very nice and helpful and will definately make your trip more enjoyable.

Prague apartments: http://www.prague-hotel.co.uk/ (we stayed in "Old Town C23")
We paid 4417 CZK/night in August 2007. I don't know what the current conversation is for that right now. Also, that was WITH a 5% discount for paying cash. It was two levels and there was a half bath, a kitchen, living area with two twin beds, couch downstairs, and the upstairs had a private bedroom with 3 twin beds, half bath, a bathroom with separate tub and shower and washing machine. It was within walking distance of Old Town Square. In fact, if you don't mind a lot of walking, we walked to every sight from our apartment, including the castle. We didn't know how to use public transport, so we just walked! The apartments picked us up and dropped us off at the train station for a small fee....
