Poland...Warsaw worth it?

Hi..Before I work in Rome for a month, I'm planning on flying into Krakow. I may only have 5-7 days total. Is it totally worth seeing Warsaw? (I have been almost all over Western Europe and do adore Chopin...) See, I usually drop off my larger suitcase and just travel locally. If Warsaw is worth it, then I will fly into Krakow and out of Warsaw but I thought, perhaps, Krakow would have enough to see nearby to make 5 nights there relaxing and worthwhile (and w/o having to lug my suitcase cross-country!) ; ) Thanks!

Yes to both:) Warsaw is worth a visit, and there's enough to see/do in and around Krakow. I really liked Warsaw; I think many people are pleasantly surprised by it. There are certainly prettier cities in central/eastern Europe, but the Old Town and New Town (which is also old) are charming and very inspiring considering that they had to be completely rebuilt after WWII. There's also the Royal Way lined with little shops and restaurants which leads from the Old Town down to Lazienki Park with the famous statue of Chopin. The monuments to the Jewish Uprising and the Warsaw Uprising are definite must-sees. It's an interesting city, but you could see most everything in a day, day and half, or certainly two days. But if you'd rather relax, there's plenty to do in Krakow with a day trip to Auschwitz and a 1/2 day trip to the famous salt mine in the suburb of Wieliczka. Krakow's my favorite city (Rome's a pretty close second :) ) It has a great blend of history, culture, architecture, and charm. Or you could add a looong day trip or over-night trip to Zakopane which is a cute little resort town, but more importantly, it's at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. Gorgeous! Whatever you decide, have a great trip!

Here's a second vote for Warsaw. I enjoyed Krakow, but it is very "touristy" and that wears thin after a few days. Warsaw is an easy train ride away and well worth the trip. Write if you have specific questions.

I think you have enough time to visit both places. I too would definitely recommend Warsaw.

"Is it totally worth seeing Warsaw?" How about partially seeing Warsaw? I used it as a two night stopover between Vilnius and Krakow. I wish I had spend at least another day or more. I was looking forward to the Chopin museum, but honestly, it wasn't the most interesting experience of my life. Seeing a collection his personal letters and original scores pales in comparison to hearing his music.

Linda, try to visit both cities. Krakow is charming with the castle, salt mine, the town square. We've visited other death camps but a day trip to Auschwitz is a must for visitors. The Warsaw Old Town area, the reconstructed Royal Palace, the museums are testimonials to the character of the Polish people. We found them warm, friendly, great food, great beers, a thoroughly delightful visit. We'd go back to both cities. In Krakow try to stay inside the walls for convenience. We actually rented an apartment for 6 days within about a block of Rynek Glowny. In Warsaw, stay on the Old Town Square or on Castle Square. Last fall we stay at the Old Castle Inn and it was great. That is, if you are attracted to the old town flavor. PS. The reconstructed Royal Castle is fabulous. Totally destroyed in WWII, rebuilt over 45 years to near original condition. Don't miss it.
