Poland + Baltic in Winter

I plan to visit Riga and then Poland in January. I want to visit the Holocaust sites, primarily since my family was imprisoned in these locales. Is Winter likely to impede my travels?

It shouldn't. Except that it will be very cold.

How are you planning on traveling between the two places. Be aware if taking the train since I think(others will correct me) that it goes through either Belarus or Russia and you will be kicked off the train if you don't have the appropriate visa.

You don't have to pass through either Russia or Belarus to reach Poland via Latvia. Both Vilnius and Kaunas in Lithuania connect to Riga directly by rail, and from either of these cities, you can connect to Warsaw without passing through Russian or Belarussian territory. You may want to stop in either city for a day or two, because the train ride from Lithuania to Warsaw takes all day (the trains in this part of Poland are slower, dirtier and offer less services than their counterparts in the western section of the country). Although winters in this part of Europe tend to be harsher than more popular destinations in the west, this usually doesn't stop the trains.
