Plitvice Lakes

We are planning to drive from Split to Ljubljana in one day. Is it possible to schedule a quick visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park enroute? I know it deserves more time, but that's all we have this trip. If doable, what route, timing, etc. would you recommend? Thank you.

We went to Plivice Lakes about 5 years ago. It is incredible! I am also an Oregonian, familiar with the incredible color of Crater Lake. Plivice's waters are also an incredible color, very turquoise. When we went, our admission was good for two days, though we spent about half a day walking around. We managed to walk on most of the trails in that time. If you can squeeze the trip in, I highly recommend it.

To answer your question - yes, I think it's physically possible to do that, but it will be a very long day. Get up and head out at oh-dark-thirty, drive straight there (from Split? figure about 4 hours driving to Plitvice). Give yourselves a few hours to walk around the lakes - it's definitely worth it. Jump back in the car and drive to Ljubljana, another 4-5 hours. Lots of time in the saddle, but I think t can be done if you're willing to spend that much time in the car. Hope the weather is good, both to allow you to stay on your ambitious driving schedule (you'll be on some 2-lane roads which are twisty at times) and also so your walk around the lakes is not done in a downpour. Get route info from viamichelin.com. Have fun.

Thanks to both of you. Appreciate the detailed advice, David. I have used Viamichelin so will check it there. We will only go weather permitting!
