Places to stay in Santorini/Crete?

I'm planning on heading to Greece for two weeks with a friend this summer, and am looking for recommendations on some hotels/hostels in Crete and Santorini. We're looking for fairly inexpensive -- any ideas?

Hostels on Santorini: Youth Hostel Oia, Santorini Camping and Youth Hostel Anna. They all have websites. If you want hotel recommendations please state your maximum combined daily room budget, in Euro. "Fairly inexpensive" doesn't really tell us anything.

It also helps if you can be more specific than "this summer"; best of all to say, from xxxx to xxx. Why? because some places to stay in Crete, for example, may be wonderful in June, but packed to the rafters in August. Conversely, there are places that may be too low-key in June but lively yet not jammed in August. Another thing... if you can say at this point, how many days in each place. Crete is BIG, and you will need to allocate at least a week to see much, unless you just want to go to one beach. Advice for Crete will also differ if you are planning to get around using busses only, or whether u plan to rent a small car for part of the time.

To elaborate on what Janet said, Crete is far larger than Santorini. You need to tell us what areas or towns you plan to visit on Crete & then it'll be easier to give you hotel recommendations.

camping is very cheap on both islands. one step up i stayed at this place called atalos on santorini in kamari. it's a small villa with swimming pool, a couple of min walk to the beach and bus. pretty clean and spacious, rooms with kitchen but i didn't cook. the guy owns this place is very cool and generous - he picked me up at the airport and later gave me a ride to the ferry at no cost and gave me a picture cd as gift, a good guy. as other folks said crete is very big. you can stay in downtown irakilo (a little more expensive but plenty to do during the night), or outside of the town (walk to beach but you need to take a bus to get in town). I stayed at this place called georgia hotel outside of the town. it's a cheap taxi ride from ferry dock. 1 block from the beach, swimming pool and good breakfast. another town chania is also very charming with many little places in the old town. i was there in sep and no need to reserve in advance.
