We're to a little bit of Croatia, more of Slovenia, and almost 3 weeks in Italy next spring. We're thinking of using the Slovenian coast (Piran, etc.) as a place to stay while not only visiting that part of Slovenia but also Trieste. Has anyone done this? Now that Slovenia is part of Schengen no-immigration-control zone, it looks even more interesting. Also, has anyone taken Piran-Venice ferry boat?
The boat from Piran/Izola to Venice is a little over 3 hrs each way, primarily day trips. Not sure on Spring schedule though.
Even before the Schengen wall came down, that border crossing has been quite hassle free for some time. Depending upon traffic, Piran-Trieste is only a 30-40 min drive, sometimes faster.
As a point of reference, Piran-Ljubljana drive is only about 1.5 hrs. If you'll be relying on trains, Koper (the last/only train stop on the coast) to Ljubljana is about 2.5 hrs.
I'm doing similar research and found this ferry schedule from Kompas for Prince of Venice cruises:
