Peleponese... Places to see and places to eat!

My family and I are having a reunion and spe4nding a week together in Napflion and then 5 days in Itilo and then 4 near Pylos. We love family, food and fun.

Any suggestions of good places to eat, where the food is wonderful, the hospitality warm, and there's a festive feel in the air?

What spots are a 'must see'?
Thanks,
Gillian

When I'm in Nafplio I always eat at least once in the Fanaria in the street which runs just above the main square. (Staikopolo Street, I think, but you can't miss it. It's full of restaurants.) The appeal of the Fanaria for me is that it's old fashioned. The food is good and the people are friendly, but it doesn't always have a lot of atmosphere.

Almost opposite is the Vasilis, which tends to be a bit livelier.

Slightly off the beaten track, with great food and a really friendly atmosphere, is the Pseiras. There are good directions here, so I won't repeat them.

No live music the evening I was there but various locals bought me wine to celebrate the fact it was Independence Day.

Have a good trip.

Gillian, I second all of Alan's opinions. In general, my wife and I follow the simple rule of eating where the local's eat. If it's filled with english speaking tourists and displays menus printed in 5 languages, we'll probably avoid it. If it's filled with people speaking Greek (even if they're Greek tourists), that's where we go. I know some people get hung up on going to the "it" restaurant, but until I know this is truly my last meal, I'm more interested in ambiance that anything else.

Thanks so much. Yes atmosphere and warmth are just as important as the food, huh. These suggestions sound great... am so looking forward to being together as a family and spending happy evenings soaking in the culture. Appreciate your input.

Don't miss the gelato place in Nafplio run by an Italian brother and sister. (I don't remember the name, but I'd bet money that it is in the Rick Steves guidebook, as our guide recommended it.) Your hotel can give you directions. I seem to remember that it is on a main square. They'll treat you as honored guests and chat. And the gelato is great.
