im going to hungary in September and planning on visiting Pecs. I'd like to plan my trip with not too much structure and not make hotel reservations not knowing exactly when Ill be in what city. Does anyone have any feedback about going to Pecs without having any preplan as to where to stay and still finding something?

I was just in Pecs last month. Great city - don't miss the Roman/early Christian tombs. Ignore the comment in the guidebook about "more of the same with a sarcophagus" and get the combo ticket. We had a reservation, so I can't speak directly to how easy it is to find a room upon arrival. But I got the sense that there were few other guests in our hotel. My overall impression in Hungary is that the worldwide recession has hit their tourist industry fairly hard and rooms are relatively easy to find. But this is just an impression; your experience may be different.

I agree with HK, Pecs is a wonderful city. Considering the time of year, you should have no problem finding a hotel. When my husband and I went we stayed at the Hotel Patria, which was a great price and had us so close to the city center we did not have to drive our car at all while there!
