I've been looking at Istanbul hotels and have noticed most offer a discount in cash. But that would be a lot of cash to carry with; we'll be there for a week and will be booking 2 rooms. Do you pay when checking in (after making sure your room is all right, of course) or checking out? Best to pay in Euros or dollars? We have had prices quoted in both. We can get Euros easily enough before we leave the US, but were planning on changing money in Istanbul for daily spending. Is it better to bring Euros for changing or US dollars? If changing Euros to YTL then obviously we would be paying exchange fees twice.
Most hotels who offer cash discounts are happy for you to pay in Turkish lira. They quote rates in dollars or euro because they need to set rates months in advance and they consider dollars and euros less subject to inflation than the lira. Actually, it's a hold over from the hyper inflation of a few years ago.
Juat to be sure, email and ask.
