Is Ostrava in the Czech Republic worth a visit? I have not seen it mentioned much in travel books/guides.

Ostrava is not exactly tourist town. It is the third largest city in the Czech Republic. Coal mining and steelworks town. Coal mines and steelworks are being closed and Ostrava is slowly changing and becoming a cleaner city. Colleges and universities are being opened. Also culture venues. There is a festival Ostrava Colors in July. Google it. If you go, visit Stodolni Street. I would say it is a little Las Vegas of Ostrava. Some mines are now opened for visitors as museums.
