Order of Countries in Central/Eastern Europe

I plan on flying into Eastern Europe from London. I wanted to know if anyone had any advice on the order of countries. I know I read in the guide book Rick's suggested order, but wondered if anyone had anything they thought worked differently. We plan on seeing Prague, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna, and Dubrovnik. the tricky part was conveniently fitting in Vienna. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

I think the real issue might be Dubrovnik. I've been wanting to go for years but have just never been able to make the trip work due to lousy flights and schedules. How do you want to travel? US to Budapest Train to Vienna Plane to krakow Plane to Prague
Dubrovnik? Look at Ryan Air for Krakow connections. You could also do the train Budapest to Vienna to Prague and hit krakow as a side trip from Budapest or Vienna. I think you can find flights Budapest to krakow to Vienna as well. And i know a driver and there is Orangeway Bus service, and. ?........ See you have to just sit down and hammer it out. Hope the trip is at least two weeks. Personally i would tighten it up a lot. Too much time traveling for my taste,

The easiest seems to be to fly from London to Prague then by train to Krakow, then to Vienna and Budapest. From Budapest fly to Dubrovnik.

I would suggest starting in Krakow and then going to Prague, Vienna, Budapest and then Dubrovnik. I did the Prague-Vienna-Budapest years ago and it is a almost a straight line shot. Unfortunately, Krakow and Dubrovnik are out of the way from the other cities and will cost you in time and cash.

If you are driving, it is one thing. If you are not driving, it is another. We did Vienna-Budapest-Zagreb-Plitvice Lakes-Split-Ljubljana-Salzburg area-Vienna last summer in a car. It was easy, very easy (as our Budapest host would say). You could do something of the sort, a kind of circle tour. You could also start in Prague, drive to Vienna, BP, and then drive to Dubrovnik.

Look at train schedules and see which routes will work. Prague-Vienna-Budapest is easy by train. I had thought about adding Krakow when I did that trip, but the train schedule to Krakow didn't work out for me. And Dubrovnik is pretty far from the all your other destinations. Just looking at a map, you could do a circle of the 4 northern cities (train or car), then fly to Dubrovnik. If you rent a car, you may want to "complete a circle" to return it in the same country, to avoid a big drop-off charge. You don't say how long the trip will be. Take into account that you will use most of one day for every transfer. Leave enough time to sightsee and enjoy each location.
