We would like to fly from San Diego to Zagreb, tour around for about 3 weeks and leave from Dubrovnik to San Diego. What is the best way to book this and which airlines are best for accommodating this style of travel? We would also like suggestion for renting and automatic transmission car for the duration of the trip. Thanks for the help-- deb
Can't help with the auto rental. With regards to the airlines, most of the major alliances will be able to get you there. For example, if flying Star Alliance you will be able to do something like SAN-SFO/LAX-FRA on United and connect on either Lufthansa or Croatian Airlines (both Star Alliance members). The return will be much the same. The above is just one example - you can change the routing in multiple ways and swap the airlines too. When booking online, use the multi-city feature to price out the open jaw.
Hope this helps.
As for the car, we've rented an automatic twice in Croatia and were quite pleased with the prices and service from AutoEurope.com (they are a consolidator and our car rental both times ended up being with National).
we rented from dollar/budget and in sep 09 they were the cheapest we could find. picked up in ljubljana and dropped in split. with drop off charge and all fees $702/week. we flew from slc/paris/ljub and from zagreb/paris/slc on delta/airfrance. our friends did dubrov/london/slc on multiple airlines.
We just returned from Croatia and Slovenia but as we live in Canada, I will not comment on flying open jaws - we did this from Vancouver very easily - but don't know the US airline rules. We flew into Dubrovnik and out of Vienna as we were in Europe for 6 weeks so had lots of time to visit the many lovely areas in between.
Re car rental - we use Sixt and found their prices and service outstanding. Please see my comments just posted under subject "Rovinj to Split" on this same site re the prices and service we experienced with Sixt.
Was just in Croatia about 2 weeks ago, we took the train to Zagreb from Lake Bled, Slovenia (a jewel in the Jullian alps), from there we rented a car to Split then to Dubrovnik, the dollar/thrifty we used out of the train station charged me $260 for one day with a drop off in Dubrovnik and charged my debit card $661 for a week before releasing the funds, sooo frustrated and will be sure to write a letter when I get back state side as this was a total rip off and I was totally lied to. the terrain was rugged and landscape is much like Arizona. If I had to do it again, I would go via boat/cruise and stay along the sea and only go in town close to the coast line, I was not crazy about Croatia and I had really been looking forward to it. I would go, see, and get out. A big surprise was to the north in Slovenia, it was very nice and more beautiful and fun. Just my thoughts!
