One day tour in Crete

We will be in Crete on Tuesday, November 22, 2011. Our ship, Celebrity Equinox, will be docking at Souda by Chania at 700 hours and departing at 1600 hours. Our time on your lovely island is much too short. My husband is a huge fan of the book Zorba the Greek. It would be wonderful to see the Crete countryside reminiscent of this book. Can you suggest a tour for this as well as telling us sources for this of driver-guides?

Just to clear up any confusion, answers on this forum are provided by travellers, not the local tourism board. I have nothing specific for you, except that Chania is a wonderful town, wandering the old town and having a nice lunch would work for me. Interestingly enough though, the movie Zorba the Greek, was filmed in and near Chania, including the town of Stavros. I believe there are several tours that visit the town, and maybe a few other sights, I would try to find an agency that offers something.

Paul, I would hope that answers here would be from personal experiences of others not from travel agencies. I have not been able to garner any information on this from Cruise Critic or Travel Advisor sites. I know that Chania is a lovely town, but we are hoping to explore the countryside. By calling it a "Zorba the Greek" tour it is not to go to the movie sight but to areas mentioned in the book. Hopefully, Rick's book on Mediterranean ports for cruisers that I have pre-ordered will provide me with some information.

Marianne, You might also consider excursions offered by the Cruise, provided your budget allows. One potential issue in venturing out on your own, is that there's a problem with the transportation and you miss getting back to the ship in time. As a previous reply mentioned, check Matt Barret's Website as you may get some good ideas for day trips in Crete. Happy travels!

First I want to thank all you wonderful folks for all your thoughtful answers. It is so marvelous that we all try to help each other. Actually we have already booked with Lefty. He has designed a terrific tour for us. The total price for a 5 hour trip is 200 Euro at 40 Euro per hour. We found a lovely couple who are sharing the tour and taxi with us as it only fits 4 people. Certainly 100 Euros is not cheap. but it will be worth it as it is something Don (and me) dearly want to do. We will still have time after the tour to explore Chania as well! So it is definitely a win/win situation! If anyone would like the details of this tour and the contact information, please email me at [email protected]

Souda port is only a few miles from the ancient city of Aptera, worth an hour's visit. Also Chania itself has some nice restaurants and shopping.

Guess I didn't pay that much attention. For Zorba-related areas try Stavros village on the Akrotiri, or Vryses east of Souda.

I stayed 6 nights in Crete mid May & the one thing I can tell you is you will not be there long enough to visit Myrtia which is where the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum is, but the movie Zorba the Greek had some of the shots in Chania. My suggestion is to just enjoy that city as that is all you will have time for. But if money is no object and you are determined to try getting to locations about the author and book/movie then I suggest Lefteris the Taxi Driver, which you can reach him through Matt Barrett's website. http://www.greecetravel.com/crete/taxitours/index.html

Thank you so much for the offer of restaurant recommendations. That is so kind of you, but unfortunately we will not be on the island long enough to have dinner there. We will be lunching in the countryside but our cruise boat leaves at 4 PM.
