Novgorod, Suzdal, and Russia

Has anyone been to (Veliky) Novgorod near St Petersburg and Suzdal near Moscow in Russia? It looks to me from photos that Suzdal might be a more charming place to visit and wanted to verify this with someone who has seen both...

Also, if there is someone who has spent some time or visited both St Petersburg and Moscow and would be willing to talk with me a little over email or phone, please let me know. I'm living in Seattle and planning a trip next summer with a friend or two.

Thanks very much,
Andrew

Hi Andrew, We traveled to Moscow twice, 2007 and 2008, as we were in the process of adopting our son. May be able to answer some of your questions. Just shoot me a note [email protected]

It's been a bit since I was in both places (1975), but the historical nature of the two cities probably hasn't changed. Among other things, Novgorod boasts the third Hagiia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) cathedral in its kremlin. Just outside the city is a marvelous outdoor, wooden-structure museum. Novgorod was a member of the Hanseatic League in northern Europe 1000 years ago, so it had many western influences. Suzdal, very near Vladimir (the capital of Russia between Kiev and Moscow and well worth a visit), was the site of religious pilgrimage for many years. Thus, the town, which is very walkable, has numerous churches of wonderful architectural beauty and interest. Most often, two churches stand side by side: the smaller one was used in the winter (warmer), and the larger was used in the summer. Suzdal also has an excellent outdoor, wooden-structure museum. The cathedral is quite impressive. I would definitely see both if you're interested in history, art, and architecture.
