Northern ItalyTo Southern Poland where to go in between?

I am planning a trip and would like recommendations of 2-4 places to visit on the way from Venice to Krakow in july. I am looking to spend a few days in each location. I am 21 and will be traveling with my boyfriend of the same age. Does anyone have any suggestions or, even better, a route suggestion that can be done by train or bus?

One obvious stopover on that route would be Vienna. You could also visit Bratislava and/or Budapest without going too far out of your way.

As Tom says Vienna and Bratislava (very close to Vienna). Then you can go to High Tatras (Vysoke Tatry) for some gorgeous hikes. High Tatras are jagged peaks on relatively small area. I like to say that they are like condensed Alps. Take train from Bratislava to Poprad where you change to local electric light rail to Stary Smokovec or Strbske Pleso. From Stary Smokovec there are buses to Zakopane (at least they used to be). Maybe even to Krakow. If there is not direct bus from S.S. take bus to Lysa Polana, walk across the border into Poland and take another bus to Zakopane. If you have time, stay overnight in Lysa Polana then get to Morskie Oko (beautiful mountain lake) and from there you can conquer Rysy (the highest mountain of Poland). The trail is marked but it's a strenuous hike.
