Need help quick.

I want to go to Greece from Italy the mid part of Sept. and take the ferry from Bari across to Greece at Patras then on to onAthens on the train. So do I have to buy a Italy and then a Greece pass plus my reservation.on the train? Ive never done this crossing before and I don't know what is required in the way of documents and ticketing.

If you were to have a railpass, in order to include the ferry as part of the pass, you would need to have both Italy and Greece on the pass. Reservations on trains are only needed if required for the specific train, reservations are best made a few days before you take the train, but can be made right up to departure.

All that said, a pass rarely makes sense in Italy, point to point tickets are usually cheaper. For the ferry, a port tax or fee is still required, and anything other than a chair on the deck costs extra. A pass also never makes sense in Greece, there just are not that many trains and buses and trains are very cheap.

I would also investigate flying, generally it costs about the same, but is only 4 to 6 hours total travel time vs 24 or more for the Train/Ferry?Train option.

And if you do end up taking the ferry, I suggest you take the bus instead of the train into Athens. It's cheaper, faster and more comfortable.
