We are in Paris for 2 days in August and want to spend one of those days on a day trip outside of Paris. Any suggestions? We need great photo opps and love historical architecture (ie castles, ruins, old towns, etc). We don't mind renting a car and driving, or taking a tour.

Has anyone taken a day trip to Mont Saint Michel? I am thinking about this location as a day trip. Is it better to drive, take the train, or book a tour?

Well I would vote for Chartes as you can take the RER there and it's a lovely day trip. Anything involving a car will chew up a lot time. The village has great old buildings to photograph. The trip through the countryside is charming. Chartes itself can be photographed from lots of interesting angles.

I also suggest Versailles and do it on your own by buying a combo RER C train and Ver ticket at the Invalides station.
We took Cityrama Tours for the Mont St Michel day trip. You can book online and pick up the tickets at their office near the Louvre in Rue de Rivoli behind the Joan of Arc statue next to the Hotel Regina.
