I am interested in seeing Don Giovanniin Prague. Reviews are very mixed, but I hear fraudulent companies are doing low quality version of the same show, which could explain the wide variety in reviews. Has anyone seen the REAL National Marionette Theatre? The website looks fantastic, but pictures don't always tell the entire story.
I went to one of the other marionette companies' production of Don Giovanni on a whim. I wanted to see the actual opera, but didn't have the budget or wardrobe, so when I saw one of the marionette theaters, I went for it...despite the phobia I have regarding puppets, dolls, and especially marionettes:) Even though the theater was crowded and cramped, and the opera was fairly abridged, I enjoyed it; the puppeteers were skilled and the production values were pretty good. Maybe it was because I didn't have any particular expectations. That may be the key, what you expect. After I first read your question, I looked at the website and that theater definitely looks nicer than the one I went to, and the sets more elaborate. If the performers are at least as good as the ones in the production I saw, the real National Marionette Theater should be quite enjoyable.
