Naphilia Greece

We will be ending a cruise in Athens and planning to spend two days on the Peleponesian pennisula, specifically Naphilia. Should we rent a car from Athens and drive? Where should we stay. Wanting reasonable yet quaint accommodations.

Anne - You can easily take a bus to Nafplio (aka Nafplion - I'm assuming that's where you are talking about) but a car is very convenient to be on your own schedule and to head out to Epidavros and Mycenae on your own. We drove all over the Peloponnese pennisula last year and it was very easy - but don't expect most of the roads to be very big. We stayed at the Pension Mariana in Nafplio. I had been there before and it was just as enjoyable this time. There is free parking in the lot above the hotel. This hotel is pretty much at the top of the town and there are lots of stairs.

I agree with the poster above. Without a car, it is very difficult to get to Myceanae and to Epidavros. But you could easily spend a couple of relaxing days in Nafplio itself without a car. Mariana is an excellent lodging choice. It always ranks high on everyones lists. If you decide to rent a car, book it in advance to be able to get an automatic (unless standard is ok with you). Idealy you should pick up and drop off at the airport (a very long haul from the port). Avoid driving in Athens itself. Once outside Athens, the roads are less congested and well marked - it's an easy drive. You MUST have an international drivers permit along with your regular license to drive or rent a car in Greece. You should also buy the full CDW.

I agree with Douglas, avoid driving in Athens. But, check into car rentals from the port - I've heard it's an option but I'm not sure if it's more expensive.

Thanks very much for your posts. We will be in Athens that evening, so will likely rent a car in town and drop off at the airport when returning as flight leaves at 9 am. Planning to be at airport hotel last night as don't think we could risk driving from Nafplio early in the am. Thoughts anyone? thanks
Anne

I can't remember a name, but try to find a car agent in Athens that is close to the national highway so you don't have to navigate Athens' confusing surface streets. Also, if you live in Victoria, B.C., be sure to go to your local CAA office to pick up an International Driving Permit, no test or membership required. Bring 2 passport photos. I don't know when your flight home departs ATH but there are a couple of inexpensive hotels out by the airport that provide free pick-up and return between 7am and 11pm (approximately) once you've dropped off your rental. Check St. Thomas B&B and Peri's Hotel. They will also arrange a taxi for you if your departure is earlier in the AM.
