Nafpilo and the Peloponese

We plan on being in the Peloponese about half of the time for our 3 week trip to Greece in July. Any suggestions for a economical but good pension in Nafpilo? Other plans include Monemvasia (1 night), Kythira Island (3), the Mani (3) & Olympia (2). We'll be driving. Any other suggestions on places to visit and stay in this general itinerary?

hi Tom,
in Nafplion, we stayed at Hotel Galini. Nothing fancy but very clean and located right in the heart of historic Nafplion. I think we paid $60/night four years ago but our trip was in December so no doubt it was cheaper. Make sure you hike the Palamidi Castle in Nafplion. Also close by would be a must visit to Mycanae (Mikines) including the the Treasury of Atreus, and the ancient Epidaurus theater. All were amazing places. We also found Ancient Corinth a.k.a. AcroCorinth to be worth an hour or two. We visited all of these places in four VERY relaxing days then went on to Delphi. Amazing trip. Enjoy :)

In Nafplion we stayed at Dimitris Bekas Domatia - it must have been 50 steps to the the hotel, but it was worth it! It's very small but the views are fantastic from the balcony. We had a triple with a t.v. and balcony for €35. The bathroom was just outside the door, but we were the only ones that used it. Doubles are €25-30/night. The owner is very friendly and chatty! 30 27520 24594

You may also want to check Pension Marianna. Also beautiful views - but has air-conditioning which you'll want in July! With private bath as well. About €70/double.

In Monemvasia we stayed in the Malvasia. Nice roooms in an atmospheric building. There are Trip Advisor comments here

I can't find on-line booking but they are bookable by fax: 0732 61722

Another option would be to stay on the mainland at the end of the causeway. There are several hotels there, you're only 5 minutes from Monemvasia itself, and it would be cheaper (although not as atmospheric) than staying in the old town.

If your on the Peloponnese with a car I'd recommend visiting Mystra: a spectacular byzantine site outside of Sparta.

Cheers
Alan

My sister and I planned our trip for the Christmas Holiday in Cinque Terre, Italy. Rick Steve's recommended Albergo Barbara Hotel in Vernazza-Cinque Terre. My sister arrived 12 hours prior to my family and found that the hotel was without hot water and heat. She found somewhere else for us to stay and told us not to stay at Albergo Barbara. The owners did not even offer my sister an extra blanket. They also charged me $235.00 USD without even staying there...knowing that my sister was upset. I am very unhappy and want others to know.
