Munich/Salzburg/Prague trip

In about 3 weeks, my husband and I are taking a conference-related trip. We want to work in some sightseeing before my Prague conference, but his stamina is limited.

We are flying in Munich on June 30 and must be in Prague on July 7. What should we see in between? How do we get from point-to-point (train? bus? shuttle? combo?)?

Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle, Rothenberg, Salzburg, and Cesky Krumlov are on our "wish list," but we realize his stamina and/or our time may not hold out for all sights. While I'm busy at the conference in Prague, my husband would like to take a tour (perhaps with driver, if we can afford it).

We plan to stay at Hotel Uhland in Munich, and Best Western Meteor Plaza in Prague. We'll fly out of Prague after the conference is over.

Any suggestions for sightseeing and related transportation would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Morningdove

Fellow Hoosier:
We have been to all three cities you mention, although on two separate trips. All three are lovely
and recommended. We travelled by train between Munich and Salzburg. It was easy. We were only in
Munich for a day, but old town was compact and easy walking. Prague is larger and more difficult to walk. We stayed in Hotel Julian there and I would recommend Mike's Chauffer if you husband would like to take a tour. Of your wish list Neuschwanstein is the most difficult on stamina. Good Luck! We will be going on a similar journey but adding Oberammergau
in July.

Just returned from 10 days in the same area...and in the Hotel Uhland for 2 nights ...loved it, take the bus about 4 doors down and you can get anywhere...or walk too! I brought my adult children to the same general areas my late husband I and did a few years ago.....I am in love with Salzburg...definitely do it
1 It sounds like you are stay in Uhland the whole time before Prague? you can take great side trips by car or train from there. I took train for several nite stay in Salzburg..just over an hours ride, get tickets that day. You can easily go there for a day trip, but cannot do the town justice ---but do see it.
I also went to Ludwigs castles (rental car) I liked Linderhof the best myself...gorgeous and less touristy...Went to Nymphemburg but just toured the outside, and spent several days in Garmish Patenkirchen area...particularly to the Zugspitz mountain...a great experience if the weather is clear...and the town is adorable... WWe went to Rothensburg....I still love that town, but it IS out of the way from Munich....it was quite a drive for us - out of the area of the aforementioned castles; and definitel not a day trip.
There honestly is more to see, sight wise, in the area within 50-75 miles of Munich....I would LOVE to see Prague!
enjoy the people of the area...I met such lovely people that were so helpful at the bus stop and train stations in Munich...those are memories I will cherish, along with conversations with lovely hotel keepers along the way...enjoy the people there,ask for any help --everyone was so glad to help us. Enjoy!

You have 7 days, so I would suggest Munich for 3 days, and use one of those days for Neuschwanstein or Salzburg. Head to Prague for the last 4 nights.

If you want to, use at least one full day and one night in Cesky Krumlov. Back to Prague for the conference.

That is a very busy schedule though, if you try and fit everything in. So if stamina is an issue like you say, try a less hectic variation of that and cut one of the side trips out.

You've picked some great cities, and I'm sure you're going to really enjoy your visits. Salzburg is an easy day trip from Munich. Weekend train tickets are very inexpensive, although you must use the slightly slower regional trains. That's what I did, and it worked well. For Neuschwanstein, day tours from Munich are another option. I haven't done one, but there are several past postings on the topic - just do a search. There's so much to see in and around Munich, Salzburg and Prague that, with only 7 days, I would leave Rothenberg and Cesky Krumlov for another time.

Many thanks to all who have written! We've narrowed our choices and itinerary a bit:

3 days/3 nights in Munich;
train to Salzburg with 1 1/2 days/2 nights there; shuttlebus to Cesky Krumlov (also 1 1/2days/2 nights);
studentagency bus to Prague for the conference (4 days/5 nights).

I was able to get a weekend one-way train fare of 35 Euro for 2 traveling together from Munich to Salzburg. The shuttlebus to Cesky Krumlov is around $110 for two -- a splurge -- but the ease of door-to-door service and 3 1/2 hour drive as opposed to a longer and much more complex train/bus trip convinced me. (Shuttlebus rep says if others want to do the same trip on the same day, our fare will be less than $55 each.) The studentagency bus fare from Cesky Krumlov to Prague is under $10 per person.

Thanks again for all the great tips, and keep them coming! We leave in two weeks.

I agree with the other poster, Mike's Chauffeur for a tour in Prague. We used him for longer trips on different occasions and he is wonderful!! Professional, on-time, etc...
