Do any of you know of a rental car company that will allow a car rented in Munich to be driven in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegavinia and Montenegro? I understand that there is a check at the Croatia, Bosnia border on the drive down the coast to Dubrovnik. What does it consist of? Just passports or is there a review of the car rental agreement?
We've rented from Hertz at the Munich airport and driven the car to Poland. Just make sure they know ahead of time where you will be going. They will only rent you a car that isn't considered "hot" to thieves so be prepared for a less than stylish ride. We frankly didn't care. Hopefully you can also drive a stick shift.
Whoever you rent your car from should be advised where you want to drive it before you agree to the terms. I rented from Sixt.com, a German firm, and they gave me a new Opel to drive into Hungary, Slovakia, CZech Republic and Poland.
I would call Auto Europe. They broker all the various car rental agencies in Europe and will be able to find someone for you. We drove to those countries last year and I believe they put us with Sixt. When we drove down the coast of Dubrovnik we were expecting a border check, too, but there never was one. We just drove straight from Trogir to Dubrovnik. The worst border crossing was going into Montenegro. The border guards were apparently protesting or on a power trip, so they were just sending cars through about 1 every 5 - 10 minutes. It took us an hour and a half to get through and we were about the 10th car in line. Be sure you have an empty bladder when you start out because without a doubt the public bathroom at the border is the worst I have ever seen, and I mean worse than India and China were 25 years ago.
