I may have posted this a few months back but thought that I would remind anyone visiting the U.S. Midwest before the end of the year to head to the National Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids, Iowa before 12/31 to experience 250 works of art by Alfonse Mucha, part of a major exhibition visiting from Prague. http://www.muchafoundation.org/exhibitions/current-future-exhibitions/exhibition/alphonse-mucha-inspirations-of-art-nouveau And since this must be in the form of a question, does anyone know where Dvorak composed his famous New World Symphony? Answer: In Spillville, Iowa. There's a clock museum in an old home there...the upstairs part of the home is where Dvorak lived in 1893 when he came to the U.S. and composed this symphony, so there's also a Dvorak museum. Why Iowa? Czech immigration & lots of Czechs here. http://www.bilyclocks.org/ So if you're looking for something all European and Czech to do this holiday season without going all the way to Europe, take a short drive to Iowa.
Thanks Michael! I grew up in Iowa and will be heading that direction for the holidays--I might be able to check this out!
Yeah, Marco knows the entire New World Symphony by heart. Just don't ask him when it was composed.
I just finished reading books by Bodie Thoene titled "Vienna Prelude" and "Prague Counterpoint" where I learned that Dvorak wrote in Spillville, Iowa.
good books, by the way. I'd love to see the museum one of these days, thanks for letting us know about it!
