ill be headed for moscow sept 21. ive travelled pretty extensively through europe but NEVER to moscow. can anyone tell me some quick tips for arrival and possibly a reasonably priced hotel. im solo so i dont mind lesser. also rs itineraries are outdated for moscow and would welcome any suggestions. thanks eric,
I'm assuming you already have your visa at this late date:) Don't use the taxis waiting at the airport terminal. They're controlled by the local mafia and will charge you over $100euros to get you to the city center. Instead arrange for a private car to to pick you up at a more reasonable price. I've used this site: https://www.gotorussia.net/transfers/airport_moscow.htm
Well, I have never heard of any private taxis charging 100+ Euros, but I am Russian, so that's probably why. Still, I would advise against taking the minivan-looking "private cabs" ( marshrutka in Russian) if you do not speak Russian. Try to arrange transport ahead of time at an agreed-upon price. Also echoing the above comment, I hope that your visa is in order. I don't know your specific circumstances, but in most cases people without contacts in Russia get their visa invitation furnished by their hotel...so I hope you had yours arranged by someone in lieu of a hotel. I know it seems simple, but I've met too many Americans who assume visas are not required to go anywhere.
Don't forget the Aeroexpress trains from the airport as well. If I were solo, and travelling light, I would use them to save some cash. We stayed here http://www.bega-hotel.ru/en/ and enjoyed it, although it is a bit of a walk to the closest metro station, about ten to fifteen minutes. The breakfast was good and it was a mainly Russian business traveler place. PM me for more details, if you like.
