Monastirka Flea Market

I realize the big day for the Monastirka Flea Market is on Sunday. However, we will not be there on the weekend. Can we find many vendors on another day?

The area that calls itself the flea market - it has a big sign at the entrance - is open every day. Actually though this is an area of small shops. A lot of them cater to Greek young people -shoes, hoodies, records etc - but there are also bead shops and a few places selling souvenirs.

The flea market proper - people selling bits and pieces from sheets on the ground - is on the other side of Ermou and only on Sundays.

At various times you'll see people, mainly immigrants, fly pitching and selling CDs, ornaments, cheap watches etc. There is a fairly constant game with the police where a few police advance, everybody picks up their goods and runs round the corner, the police drift off, and everyone returns.

The top of Ermou, near Syntagma, has a lot of this and also quite a lot of busking and is worth a stroll.

Cheers
Alan

Alan, thank you so much for the wonderful walking directions and map for Athens. I've printed them off and they are in my must do file for this summer. You have been a huge help. Keep traveling.

Vendors usually begin to close up their flea market stalls around 2, although it can be earlier if the crowds are sparse. It's a zoo by 11 most Sundays.
