Missing Anything?

We are taking a 9 day trip to Croatia & Slovenia in late Sept/early Oct. We will be based in Ljubljana, and visiting Lake Bled, possibly Lake Bohinj and/or Vintgar Gorge, and definitely going to Skocjan Caves (maybe Predjama Castle). Then in Croatia, staying mostly north, going to Plitivice Lakes one day and then over to Istria, staying in Rovinj and visiting Pula & Motovun (maybe other hill towns or Piran). In that itinerary/locations, we may have an extra day or 1/2 day in each of Slovenia and Istria, depending on what we decide to see. Although we very much appreciate Rick's suggestions in his books (and find them, at least for sights and locations, if not hotels and restaurants, to be great and give great advice about what to see/avoid), we recognize that they are not the "end-all, be-all" for sights. So I'm wondering if there is anywhere else that anyone considers "must-see" in either of these locations that Rick does not cover (another great old small town, for example). We prefer the historical buildings and beautiful views to museums, if that helps.
