Paula Depends of course what you like and what you want to pay. I go every year to visit a friend who lives with a Czech woman. We often have lunch here, which is good if you want somewhere more like a pub. http://www.gastroinfo.cz/pivodum/index.php?content=uvod&lang=eng I also like this place, http://www.usadu.cz/index.php but it's three metro stations from the centre, under the TV mast. The metro is Jirího z Podebrad and there is a nice modernist church on the square. http://metro.angrenost.cz/a/jp.php More upmarket and central is the Black Eagle http://www.cernyorel.com/index.php Prague is lovely. Have a great time. Alan

Sorry if this is not helpful, but I went to a place for beer and dinner that was recommended by our tour guide. She said it was a "typical Czech beer hall." The food was plentiful, inexpensive and good (as was the beer.) Most of the people eating there were not tourists... mostly Czech and a few business people. Many of the waiters spoke minimal English. It is directly across the street from the Spanish Synagogue (and the statue of Kafka.) With that at your back, literally just walk across the street (if memory serves me correctly.) Okay, I did a search, it is called Kolkovna and got mostly 4 and 5 star reviews from Tripadvisor.

Check the Rick Steves guidebook - everywhere I ate he recommended was just as advertised (and good). Ambiente Lokal – Czech bar food w/ flair (at Dlouhá 33) Ceska Kuchyne - Czech blue collar cafeteria, cheap and lots of locals (Havelska 23)
Klasternia Pivovar - monastery brewery in the castle quarter - best beer of my trip (and I don't like beer).

Paula I second Ray's suggestion of Kolkovna opposite the Spanish Synagogue. It's one of four or five places around the city owned by Pilsner Urquell. They all have similar menus and good beer. Talking about them reminds me of the Hybernia, which is a good mid price option near Namesti Republicky. http://www.hybernia.cz/ Alan

I've not been to Prague since April 2011, but I did find a cute restaurant in Old Town that I really liked, which is saying something because I didn't much care for the food in Prague other than ethnic stuff. This one is called CP 1 Cafe and they had a little patio with outdoor grills. The address is Konviktska 24, near Bethlehem namiesti.

I almost forgot! The Indian restaurant behind the Tyn Church (forgot its name) has a great lunch deal and better food than most of the restaurants around that area.

I think Emily is refering to Indian Jewel and yes it is very good.

We were in Prague last week and can also recommend the Kolkavna. Our waiter spoke very good English; personnel and shifts change. For non-Czech food we liked the Orange Moon (curries) which RS has recommended. Enjoy.

Oh do I! On our first trip to Prague, our apartment was around the corner from U Vejvodu. On our first night, it was the quickest place to eat since we were so tired. We spent almost three weeks in Europe, and not one meal after that night beat the meal we had there. We went back to Prague last September and made sure we ate there again. It was again, a top meal during that three week European tour. Typical Czech cuisine, and it was awesome. Here's their website: http://www.restauraceuvejvodu.cz/?page=jlistek&lang=EN

We visited in July and loved Mozaika, also near the Jiriho metro. It was the best place we ate in Prague, and very reasonable, with good house wines. (It also had the advantage of being five blocks from my son's apartment, which I'm guessing won't affect your decision!) http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g274707-d694847-r124479118-Mozaika_Prague_Restaurant-Prague_Bohemia.html Between the monastery and the castle, there's a restaurant with a terrace and a wonderful view of the valley. I don't remember the name, but it's about 1/4 mile before the castle and you can see the terrace if you peak through the doors. Everything we ordered was tasty, except for a wildly over-dressed Caesar salad, and the atmosphere was warm and relaxing.
