My husband and I are planning a driving trip from Vienna into Slovenia for early May-12 days-we hope to visit the Julian Alps in our travels. Will the mountain passes(Vrsic) be open at that time? Will spend about a week in Slovenia, then to Melk/Danube region two nights in Vienna. Any help with this is appreciated!
There is one principle road through the Julian Alps, including the Vrsic Pass, and it is closed because of snow in winter. When we visited in April, 2007, the end-of-winter repairs were just completed and the road was just reopening. We confirmed that by contacting the Slovenian visitor center in Ljubljana.
The Alps are beautiful. Other highlights are Ljubljana, the history-laden area near the Italian border, the coastal fishing town of Piran, and the karst area with the fantastic cave tours. We're history and museum fans, so we enjoyed the museums in Ljubljana.
Please feel free to write if you have any specific questions.
They keep the roads clear as soon as possible at that time of year. Some years when there is no late snow or the weather warms up, the roads through the Alps will be open.
We drove through later in the Spring when the snow was melting.
Best thing is to check highway conditions on the web before you leave home or as soon as you arrive in Vienna.
