Going on cruise, ports we are hitting that don't know what is a must see, Split Croatia, Corfu Greece, Mykonos Greece,Dubrovnik Croatia...Tours through ship is through the roof, anyone have any ideas??
I can't comment on "must sees" -- that varies so much from person to person. However, if you're interested in soaking up the atmosphere independently, it is really easy to get to Split from the harbour. A 5-10 minute walk should get you to the promenade and Diocletian's Palace. Dubrovnik is a beautiful place to walk the wall, enjoy gelato, etc. You will need to find your way by bus from the cruise ship dock to the Old Town--I'm guessing a 20 min. bus ride? Once there, you can't really get lost and you'll be able to wander away from the masses of other cruise ship people. IF you don't like researching about the history or culture, then you may wish to enlist a guide or private tour.
Hi Pam - The truth is that you do not need cruise tour packages in any of the ports you mention - I ama tour consultant and often work with the ships BUT - not needed in those ports. Corfu - yiou can actually walk from the ship to Corfu town or take a taxi - fun - lots of shops and cafes to see.
Mykonos - the ship will run a shuttle into Mykonos town and all you need to do is walk the town - You can rent an ATV if you'd like to ride out to Paradise Beach BUT - If this is your first time in Mykonos you probably should see the town - It is fascinating!
Dubrovnik is a walled city that is spectacular - the ship will shuttle out to or a inexpensive cab - Walk the wall , sit at one of the Cafes up on top and enjoy the views and see all the shops down below. No cruise package required!!
Same pertain to Split so the good news - You can do this Pam !! I know you can !!!
Almost sounds like a Princess Cruise and I do some work for them and will actully be in the same ports at the same approximate time.
A Great Cruise - Enjoy - Greg
Greg or anyone, what about the port Iraklion,Crete,Greece? Only going to have less than 5 hrs there, coming from NCL,Gem,,the palace of Knossos and the open market, is it close to the port that we dock.. Can get a taxi tour for 140Euros for 3 people, seems high too. Any other ideas
Pam: Have you been to the website cruisecritic.com? You can get info on all the ports that cruise ships go into, plus there are messages boards for queries to other cruise people. You may find it helpful. Certainly Corfu & Dubrovnik are easy to see on your own.
Thanks so much for the advice, I think we going to try doing the ports on our own... We will be leaving soon 11 days!!!! Thanks again!
You can check cruisecritic.com. There is a lot of cruise specific information there that will focus on ports and options (although most seem to take the cruise excursions). At cruisecritic you can also sign into a thread for people who are on the same cruise as you and get some ideas from them. There is often a cruisecritic get together on the first day of the cruise, some are even "hosted" by the ship.
Another good place to ask is fodors.com in their Europe travel talk forum. The travel style there seems to lend itself to private tours. Fodors also has a Cruise travel talk forum.
